FAQ
What is this?
attention mechanism is a series physical/digital artifacts created by Keith Scharwath. The project explores the relationship between in-person interactions and the transactional aspect of blockchain technology.
I’ve never used NFTs or blockchain, how do I receive the NFT?
In order to receive the NFT associated with your physical artifact, you will need a crypto wallet with a small amount of ethereum in it to pay the fee for minting (this is known as a gas fee - a variable fee which reflects the amount of traffic on the network). I recommend creating a MetaMask wallet and using Coinbase to purchase your ETH. Once you have a wallet set up with some ETH in it, scan the QR code on the back of the artifact. You will be send to a unique URL for your piece. Click “Connect Wallet” and follow the instructions.
How much will it cost to mint?
The cost will vary depending on network activity, but should generally be in the range of $1-$5. If fees seem elevated, wait a day or two and try again.
The artifact is nice, but I’m not interested in the NFT. What happens if I never mint it?
The QR code on the back of the physical artifact is unique to that piece, and the NFT will remain mintable so long as the attention mechanism system is functional.
Important note: anyone who scans the QR code could potentially mint the NFT. Keep it safe if you plan to keep your artifact in a “mintable” state.
I’m strapped for cash, can I sell my NFT?
Yes. Once you’ve received the NFT to your wallet, it’s yours to sell or transfer as you see fit.
I have a heavy disdain for blockchain technology and would like to make sure my NFT is never minted.
I get it, crypto and blockchain are not for everyone. By destroying the QR code on the back of the artifact, you could reasonably prevent the artifact from ever leaving the attention mechanism wallet. Your house, your rules.
I love NFTs but have a heavy disdain for physical objects.
I get it, personal possessions can hinder movement and severely limit our freedom as individuals. Once you’ve received the NFT, feel free to destroy the artifact in your pursuit of a more purely digital existence. From what I understand, MDO plywood is highly flammable. I would ask that you please document the destruction and send a record to attn_mechanism@gmail.com.
